Oh Sugar where you going
In your summer clothing?
Don’t you know ?
It snowed just last night
You must be out of your mind
And oh sweetheart whatcha thinking?
Weren’t you even listening?
It’s not hot
Not hot outside
You must be out of your mind
And she said
You don’t know how wrong you are
You don’t know how wrong you are
And she said
Oh Sugar don’t you know me?
My heart is overflowing
So what if I’ve no sign of a mind
I must be one of a kind
Oh sweetheart whatcha thinking?
Weren’t you even listening
We are going to dance outside
I’m going to love you like fire
And she said
You won’t know how loved you are
You won’t know how loved you are
And she said
You won’t know how loved you are
You won’t know how loved you are

I was thinking about the comeback
I was thinking about the kid
I was thinking about the nights of glory that we lived
In my memory there’s light on everything we did
I’m looking for the magic of my twenties once again
I’m looking for the magic of a younger me
I got older in my mind, yea I had to have a change
Put old dreams aside after everything
All those tears that I cried, after all the pain
All the pacts we swore and the music that we made
All the pacts we swore, all the dreaming
But my life is not a story I’m not settling
Couldn’t write it in a book, or run it on a screen
There’s lows they haven’t shown you
There’s highs they only try
Can’t map the road of a chemical ride
I’ve only got one piece of real advice
Keep your chin up handsome
Keep your head as level as can be

Like You Used To

Baby you shook but you don’t shake
You don’t shake for me no more
You used to look my way
But now you see right through me don’t ya
Want to see your hips moving on the floor
Come my way like you used to
Baby you shook but you don’t shake
You don’t shake for me no more
You used to know my name
But now you say “How do you spell it?”
Want to hear your lips call me on the phone
Say my name like you used to
Baby you shook me like a quake
Like an earthquake from below
Bits and pieces of debris
Where I used to have a home
Want to see your hips killing on the floor
Come my way like you used to
Want to hear your lips call me on the phone
Say my name like you used to
Want to see your hips tremble hear you moan
Come my way like you used to

Ghosts

The ghosts came over the county line
And kissed your mouth with lips of ice
Stood stock still shimmering light
Your brother was among them
He a child, now you so tall
You never knew he was that small
The branches creaked and the wind it blew
The ghosts winked and danced with you

Oh lordy lord
Oh look at me
I put a hole in the wall
Where your photo should be
I can’t keep seeing you doll
When i do I just can’t breathe
Oh lordy lord
Oh look at me
I put up a hell of a fight
When he took you from me
We went down in the mud in a brawl that filled the streets
Oh lordy lord
Oh look at him
He left with a swollen black eye
His front teeth chipped
I was an animal baby
That’s how much you meant
Oh lordy lord
Oh look at me
I’ve got blood on my clothes
And dirt on my chin
I won that fight baby but you still left with him
Oh lordy lord
Oh look at me
I’m the toughest of the tough
Nobody fucks with me
But you cut my heart babe, and you cut it deep
Oh lordy lord
Oh look at him
I beat him baby
No contest
But he’s got you girl and in the end he wins

They came and they picked up sweet miss Sally Day
In a shiny thunderbird that was owned by Jimmy Ray
She’s such a pretty girl all the boys were known to say
She wouldn’t speak a word, not a secret she’d betray
But they couldn’t find her bones till the 5th of May
Whatever happened to sweet miss Sally Day
The cops went door to door when her mother phoned it in
And her father cleaned his gun with a fridge full of beer
Jimmy Ray swore that he lost her at the bar
And his friends told the same to the chief officer
They couldn’t find a body with winter on it’s way
Whatever happened to sweet miss Sally Day
The first snow fell in December like a sigh
And Daddy went mad on a full moon night
He put a loaded gun to the roof of Jimmy’s mouth
And asked him real slow where he left his little girl
They found Jimmy’s body but they couldn’t find his head
Whatever happened to sweet miss Sally Day
To this day no one knows Jimmy’s last words
Cause Daddy went to hiding with his boots tracking blood
The cops found him hid and he fired and he missed
And the shots rang out till another Day was dead
But Sally Day’s bones were just thirty yards away
But they wouldn’t find that out until later in the spring

Wolves

Everybody’s talking about the big bad wolf
Everybody plays the part of red riding hood
Everybody’s talking about the black sheep
Everybody’s looking at me like I’m a freak
Everyone’s got stories of princesses and queens
Nobody’s saying exactly what they mean
People on a leash like a long toothed dog
Got a muzzle and a collar, yea what more could you want
When a heartbeat starts
Till the blood runs cold
No, the young don’t want to get old.
Everybody’s talking about the boy who cried wolf
Everybody wants to be seen as Robin Hood
Pretty people acting like it's all so hard
Ain’t as good as money, but it sure goes awful far
Tell a little story, tell a little lie
Sell it to the press, a body’s got to make a dime
Take a little profit, set a little trend
It ain’t about the moment, it’s all about getting ahead
When a heartbeat starts
Till the blood runs cold
No, the young don’t want to get old

In 2017 I caught myself a train
To see about a girl who lived far away
And didn’t speak a word of English at the time
With cheekbones like a queen and eyes of summer sky
I left those coastal mountains, the city and the rain
Whistled through the Rockies, and waited in the plains
And stared at passing hills, and counted passing farms
And had a lot of time cause Canada is large
The train it would stop for hours at a time
In the middle of nowhere for no reason why
The passengers would wander from bunk to dine in cart
And sit around with strangers sipping coffee playing cards
In the spirit of adventure I was popping in and out
Of cities on the way to see what they’re about
My family in the prairies, my friends in Toronto
They ask me where I’m going, said: to see about a girl
And what, what’s a man to do with you
What is a man to do
You’re moving like a train
You’re howling in the night
With the steam rising up to kiss the starry sky
I got to Montreal, my brother greeted me
And I slept in the smallest room I’ve ever seen
I met you at the bar and we got a little damp
And we grossed out the bartender then we left
You didn’t have a room, I didn’t have a bed
We didn’t have cash so we parked the truck instead
And the steam it rose, it clung to window pane
And the street light shone down on your pretty face
I asked you about the difference of like and love in French
You said it’s all the same, you said you say “Je t’aime”
But you never say a word that you don’t mean
And you said that night that you loved me
And what, what’s a man to do with you
What is a man to do
You’re moving like a train
You’re howling in the night
With the steam rising up to kiss the starry sky

Callum Gaudet Nova Scotia
Hitchhiking and travelling internationally left Gaudet with one sound in mind, the sound of stories. He recognized that stories connect individuals from various walks of life, and that connection, brief or lifelong, leaves a powerful imprint on the minds of people. With lyrics that evoke a raconteur, Callum Gaudet's writing stands on the edge of folksong, short story, and loud vintage tube amps. ... more
